CITY KILLERS FC ARE THE NEW CAPE WINELANDS DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY TOP 8 CUP CHAMPIONS.

City Killers were crowned the Cape Winelands District Municipality / Safa Cape Winelands 2021- 2022 Top 8 Champions played at the Mbekweni Stadium in the Safa Drakenstein LFA over the weekend.

They booked a place in the finals after beating last year’s defending champions FC Cheetahs of Stellenbosch, coming from a goal down to win 2-1.

The champions met their their toughest opponent FC Malaga, who stood their ground and showed why they are one of the most dominant teams in the region. FC Malaga marched to the finals after thrashing their neighbours, Glen Eagles FC 4-0 in the first semifinal.

The final ended all square 0–0 after regulation time, and the resulting in extra time which saw Killers emerging victorious.

Speaking to our Media department after the victory, the champions’ captain and long serving player Lukholo Macibela, sang praises for his team’s never-say-die attitude throughout the Tournament. ” It’s been a long time waiting for this trophy to add to our collection. In the last Top 8 Tournament we lost it in the final and I’m happy that we finally won it. We played so well in the tournament because we respect each other and we play as a team. As a senior player and captain of the team I teach junior players the importance of respecting the coach, senior players and fellow teammates”

Macibela also won an individual award for Player of the Tournament for the second time in a row.
“I am very happy to win this award again and I am hungry for more awards. I would like thank our supporters for always encouraging us and supporting us. I would like also to thank the coach and management for trusting me with the role of leading the team”.

The individual brilliance awards winners are;
Player of the Tournament – Lukholo Macibela (City Killers FC)

Top Goalscorer of the Tournament- Curvin Williams (FC Malaga)

Goalkeeper of the Tournament – Olifant Sonamose (City Killers FC)
Athini Phaliso – Young Player of the Tournament (FC Malaga)

Defending Champions FC Cheetahs walked away with bronze medal after beating Glen Eagles FC 3-1 in their derby 3rd place playoffs.

Cape Winelands Sports Council President,Mr Lorenzo Arendse graced the tournament with his presence but unfortunately could not do the honours of handing over the trophies and medals because he had to rush off to other sporting commitments before the final was over
