Ilze Jones’ ladies showed character in their opener against Litz FC when they won by 5-4 from trailing 4-2, a comeback that paid off a day later. In their second match they lost by 2-0 against Hout Bay FC ,ending their first day in third place with 3 points.
On Sunday, the Cape Winelands outfit outplayed Royal Swallows FC when they thumped the hosts by 9-1. It was clear from the start that Eagles had their eyes set on the promotion when they scored two goals in the first 2 minutes of the game.
Coach Ilze Jones could not hold her excitement about the team’s achievement.
To be promoted to the Sasol League with these young players is a great achievement. “I have been with this group of ladies for 7 years, and I always knew that one day they will make it to the top.
The excitement is overwhelming I am very proud of the young ladies.
We worked very hard as a team prior to the play-offs but it was all worth it, we made lots of sacrifices practice two times a day early mornings an evenings. We had fitness session at Stellenbosch Virgin Active as well. We had different team building sessions which our SAFACW VP presented. There will always be challenges but we learned to overcome it”
Jones also gave thanks to those who contributed in making sure the team succeeds.
“I want to thank the parents of the ladies that allow and support them all the time, thanks for standing behind our kids. Big Thanks to Virgin Active Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch FC, Mr John Saaiman and Cloetesville Sport Board, Dr Malgas
Thanks to Glen Eagles FC for allowing women to do what they love”
This is the second time Glen Eagles FC is promoted to the third-tier division.
