Stellenbosch City Crowned the First Cape Winelands Top 8 Cup Champions

SAFA Cape Winelands hosted its inaugural Top 8 tournament in Cloetesville Stadium on 20 and 21 March 2021. The two-day tournament featured 8 teams listed according to their finishing in the 2019/20 season.

The participants were;

  • African Jaguars
  • FC Malaga
  • City Killers FC
  • Glen Eagles FC
  • Stellenbosch City FC
  • Paarl United FC
  • Mbekweni United FC, and
  • Maties FC (Stellenbosch University)

Stellenbosch City won their first match by 2-0 against African Jaguars, FC Malaga played against Paarl United and won by 2-1 and City Killers also secured their place in the semifinals with a 4-1 win over Mbekweni United.

After a successful first day, a live draw took place and City Killers were drawn against FC Malaga and Stellenbosch City against Glen Eagles.

On day two and the final day of the tournament City Killers thumped FC Malaga 4-2 to book their spot in the final. For Stellenbosch City, a single goal win against Glen Eagles was enough to proceed to meet Killers in the final.

In the final, the two giants gave a stellar performance with neither giving in. After regular and extra time they were one goal apiece and penalties had to be the decider. The nerve-wracking shootout ended with Stellenbosch City being crowned the first Cape Winelands Top 8 Champions walking away with a floating trophy and a R10 000 cash prize. The runners-up received R 7 000 and bronze medalists FC Malaga walked away with R 3 000.

Cape Winelands Top 8 also looked at the outstanding performances of the individuals in the tournament and for their hard work the following participants walked away with their own trophies’
