Sporting Stars were crowned champions of the SAFA Cape Winelands Women’s tournament after beating Glen Eagles FC 2-1 in the final in Cloetesville on Monday (09 August 2021).
The tightly contested final was a nail biting one and this was no surprise as the two finalists are two of the strongest teams in the Women’s Regional League. “Black and Yellow ” Stars put two at the back of net over Eagles’ single goal to emerge victorious in the eight-club tournament.
Sporting Stars, Glen Eagles, Nietvoorbij, Franschoek Spurs, Mbekweni Sundowns, Real Stars, Falcons FC, Juventus and guest team Pieter Langeveldt Primary School all participated at the tournament which was hosted in the Cloetesville Stadium in Stellenbosch on Women’s Day
Stars did not only take the overall crown from the competition but also bagged individual awards. Goalkeeper Paulina van Wyk was voted best goalkeeper of the tournament, while coach Aasif Witbooi bagged the coach of the tournament award after leading the team to glory.
“Sporting Stars Ladies is not a good knockout team, we had played a few knockout matches and didn’t perform well in group stages but few times we reached finals we go all the way. Our team now is building process of getting new blood for future. On Monday we had small Ilhaam Fortuin who is 10 years old giving her feeling of women’s football. We want to build a strong team for Sasol in the next two years so winning SAFA Cape Winelands Women’s Tournament was a positive move for our ladies team , hopefully there will be much more winning tournaments and girls will want to play football .” Said the winning coach Aasif Witbooi.
